Loved No More

My newest poem addresses unhealthy relationships and emotional abuse. When I wrote The Fifth Circle, I delved into different types of abuse, including physical and sexual. The book also explored the unhealthy relationship between the two main characters and showed the gradual progression of abuse. Emotional abuse does not always evolve into physical abuse, but it can be just as harmful. Manipulation, controlling behaviors, belittling comments… these are indications that you might be in an abusive or unhealthy relationship.

Some of you might be able to relate to this poem, even if you haven’t been in an abusive relationship. There are times we might feel unhappy with a spouse or partner, unappreciated, even unloved. Relationships can be difficult. If you think you might be in an abusive relationship, seek help. (Resources are listed below the poem)

Loved No More

I am loved
When I say all the right things
I’m always agreeable and never complain

I am loved
When I listen to you talk
I keep my silence when it annoys you

I am loved
When I’m unselfish
I put you first in all aspects of my life

I am loved
When I’m available
I never turn you away or show impatience

I am loved
When I’m useful
Cooking, cleaning, bringing home a paycheck

I am loved
When I support your dreams without question
My dreams are irrelevant

I am loved
When you don’t have to worry about money
I worry enough for both of us

I am loved
When I look my best
But don’t spend money on my appearance

I am loved
When I am young
Before wrinkles mar my skin and gray streaks my hair

I am loved
When it’s convenient for you
If you remember I’m here, that I’ve been waiting

I am loved
Until you decide it’s no longer working
Then I’m loved no more
